About

Without a doubt the options for the flooring shopper grow at an ever-increasing pace. From vinyl to hardwood to cork to laminate there is something for everyone.

We here at Indoor Floors wish to lay it all out for potential flooring consumers. As flooring choices diversify and multiply selecting the right flooring can become a burdensome task.

What is really hot these days is “green flooring.” What makes a flooring type green?

There are several factors. One is sustainability. Sustainability is the consideration of how rapidly replenishable a product’s compositional materials are. For instance, many hardwood floors are made from the timber of trees that are at least 25 to 30 years old, if not older. This means that hardwood flooring as a product generally is not sustainable because it takes decades to replace. Conversely, bamboo flooring which is composed of bamboo fibers grows back quickly. Bamboo is the fastest growing terrestrial plant on Earth and so commercially harvesting it can be managed in a sustainable way. Now, this is not always the case because there are those out there who practice malicious and deleterious reaping policies. But this is the exception, not the rule.

Another factor that makes flooring green is how much of it, if anything, is comprised of recycled materials. The three Rs of environmentalism are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

An example in the flooring industry where recycled materials are employed is cork flooring. Typically 10% or more of cork flooring contains corks from wine bottles and other such things. These corks would be left to rot in a landfill and further burden our planet with its already almost incomprehensible expanse of waste. By recycling them, not only is waste reduced, but fewer cork trees have to be stripped of their bark to make cork flooring. This also cuts down on harvesting costs which can be passed down to the consumer, saving both your planet and your bank statement at the same time.

Other than the eco-flooring epidemic sweeping America and much of the developed world, hardwood flooring is still the most coveted. But, regardless of what you need, we here at Indoor Floors are here to help you.
